How to write a funny birthday message

Aim the joke at age, cake or yourself, never at something the person is sensitive about. Short is funnier, so keep the setup to one line and the punchline to a few words. If you want to say something kind as well, add one sincere line after the joke.

Sample messages to copy

Use one as it is, or start from it and add a detail only you would know.

  • Happy birthday! Don’t worry about getting older; you are still younger than you will be next year.

  • Congratulations on another lap around the sun. You still look great for your mileage.

  • I tried to fit all your candles on one cake, but the fire department said no. Happy birthday!

  • Happy birthday to someone aging like a fine cheese: stronger, and a little more fragrant.

  • Age is just a number. In your case, a fairly big one. Happy birthday!

  • You are not old, you are vintage. Happy birthday, collector’s item.

Questions about funny birthday cards

Can I rewrite the joke on a funny template?

Yes. Every line of text can be edited, so you can keep the design and replace the punchline with your own joke.

Is a funny card OK for a coworker?

Usually, if the joke is light. Gentle jokes about cake, candles or getting older are safe choices for colleagues; save personal jokes for close friends.

Can I add stickers to a funny card?

Yes. Add stickers such as party hats, cool faces and party poppers from the Elements panel, then resize and rotate them to set up the joke.
